The Chief Secretary is the head of the Civil Service, a diverse organisation with over 50 departments in total. Mr Glendon Martinez, appointed on 1st January 2024, currently holds this position.
The Civil Service provides a wide range of services to members of our community, businesses, the private sector and tourists. The work done by Civil Servants directly impacts the lives of citizens and contributes to the overall well-being of society. By maintaining a professional and dedicated workforce, the Civil Service contributes to good governance.
The role of the Chief Secretary is to ensure that the Civil Service, as an organisation, meets the needs of the Government of the day by providing advice and implementing its policies effectively. In addition, he oversees the management and resources of the entire Civil Service and is responsible for the 5000+ Public Servants that work for HM Government of Gibraltar, all of whom are accountable to him.
