• About Us

The Office of the Marine Accident Investigation Compliance Officer (OMAICO) and
the Marine Accident Investigation Compliance Officer are independent statutory
bodies appointed under Regulation 5 (2) of the Gibraltar Merchant Shipping
(Accident Reporting and Investigation) Regulations 2012.

The MAICO is responsible for:

• Carrying out expeditious investigations to determine the causes of
  accidents involving Gibraltar registered ships or ships operating in British
  Gibraltar Territorial Waters (BGTW) in order to determine their causes and
  to propose remedial actions and prevent any future incidents, accidents,
  marine casualty or pollution
• Publishing reports that include our recommendations on improving safety at
  sea and the actions we’ve taken
• Increasing awareness of how marine accidents happen
• Improving national and international co-operation in marine accident
  investigations
