April 23, 2019
HM Government of Gibraltar’s Department of Environment, Heritage and Climate Change in conjunction with the Advanced Leadership Foundation, and the University of Gibraltar, will be hosting Gibraltar’s first ever World Earth Day on Friday the 26th of April, 2019 from 2:30pm - 7pm at the University of Gibraltar.
This event will bring together international and local members from the public, private, and nonprofit sectors to participate in discussions and panels about the importance of sustainable development in the fight against climate change. Gibraltar World Earth Day will focus on the role of the Green Economy in Gibraltar as a means to tempering climate change, and the importance of youth in this process.
World Earth Day began in 1970 in the United States, to educate university students about the growing threats to the environment. Since then, it has expanded to hundreds of countries around the world, with millions of participants coming together to help solve climate change. Gibraltar will join the movement, and reassert its commitment to the fight climate change on World Earth Day through education and activation.
The programme will include high-level keynote speakers, roundtables, presentations, and open discussions about the importance of the Green Economy and Corporate Social Responsibility as a method to tempering the threats of climate change in Gibraltar. Key international stakeholders such as Dr. Carlos Fernandez-Jauregui of Water Assessment and Advisory Global Network (UNESCO), Max Trejo of Organismo Internacional de Juventud (OIJ), Juan Verde of Advanced Leadership Foundation (ALF), as well as a representative from Al Gore’s initiative The Climate Reality Project, will convene with Minister for the Environment, Energy, Climate Change and Education, Prof John Cortes and Department of the Environment CEO Dr Liesl Mesilio, as well as participants from the private, public, and non-governmental sectors, including the Gibraltar Youth Council. Local event sponsors include Ernst & Young, Resolve Marine Services, GibMaroc Ltd, Bassadone Automotive Group, Metalrok, and Fasta Food Limited.
