Westside School Pupils Celebrate Llanito Identity as part of GCS Initiative - 495/2026

June 26, 2026

A new exhibition showcasing the creativity of Westside School Year 8 pupils is on at GEMA Gallery, Montagu Bastion, running throughout the month of July.

The exhibition, developed in collaboration with Gibraltar Cultural Services (GCS) as part of its Celebrating Llanito initiative, presents a collection of works created by Year 8 pupils. Drawing inspiration from the bold and playful style of Pop Art, the pupils have produced pieces that combine vivid colour, repetition, and graphic imagery to express their perspectives.

Focusing on Llanito culture and identity, the artworks incorporate recognisable elements such as local food and colloquial phrases, offering personal and imaginative interpretations of what it means to be Gibraltarian.

Members of the public are invited to visit the exhibition at GEMA Gallery, Montagu Bastion, which will be open weekdays 10am to 3pm and selected Saturdays throughout the summer including this Saturday, 27th June.

The exhibition will run until the end of July, coinciding with the summer programme for more interaction. Visitors will also be able to experience the creativity and cultural insight of Gibraltar’s young artists amongst the extensive collection of works on display at GEMA.

This project forms part of GCS’s wider efforts to support artistic initiatives that preserve and celebrate Llanito, encouraging young people to engage with and express their cultural identity in meaningful and contemporary ways.
