Trino Cruz, poet, writer and translator, recently participated in the Patras World Poetry Festival 2026, one of the leading international literary events in the Mediterranean region. His participation has been made possible by Gibraltar Cultural Services and their partnership with the Patras Festival.
A multilingual writer whose work is deeply influenced by his upbringing and experiences between Gibraltar, Morocco, Andalucía and England, Trino Cruz has built a distinguished literary career that reflects the Mediterranean's rich cultural diversity and interconnected heritage.
His invitation to the Patras World Poetry Festival represents another important international platform for Gibraltar's literary voices and cultural presence. Through the support of Gibraltar Cultural Services, Cruz joined poets and writers from around the world in a celebration of literary exchange, creativity, and intercultural dialogue.
Speaking about the opportunity, Cruz reflected it was both an honour and a reminder of the value of participating in international cultural dialogue. Across the festival, there was genuine interest in Gibraltar’s stories, identity and cultural perspective, reinforcing the importance of ensuring our collective voice is heard on the global stage. Patras itself, with its rich maritime history and cultural diversity, shares many similarities with Gibraltar, and conversations with poets from around the world highlighted the common themes of identity, migration and belonging that connect us all.
The festival also reaffirmed poetry’s enduring role in opening channels of communication, challenging assumptions and encouraging deeper reflection on the world around us. Cruz added that discovering new voices, particularly from contemporary Greek poetry, was one of the most rewarding aspects of the experience. Looking ahead, he is optimistic about the future of Gibraltarian literature and culture and feels that the growing international presence of our writers and artists reflect a vibrant and confident creative community, one that continues to contribute meaningfully to a rich global cultural exchange.
