Traces of Humanity leaves its mark in London - 408/2026

May 27, 2026

The major landmark exhibition ‘Traces of Humanity’, organised by Gibraltar Cultural Services on behalf of the Ministry for Culture has now opened in London, after an initial exhibition in Margate on the southeast coast of England. The exhibition, in collaboration with the Lloyds Group of London, was opened by Minister for Equality, Employment, Tourism and Culture, The Hon. Christian Santos GMD MP.

The event at Noho Studios in the West End features works by Gibraltarian artists, artists from the Lloyds Art group and internationally renowned artists. Drawing inspiration from the Gorham’s Cave complex a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the initiative highlights the deep connection between art, history and human expression.

Minister Santos described the project as a positive and impactful one that focused on Gibraltar’s culture and identity. With the weather warm and bright, the show attracted a brilliant turnout, with networking and discussion by the Gibraltarian artists who were in London for the occasion, international artists and others attending.

A presentation on the Gorham’s Cave Complex by Professors Clive and Geraldine Finlayson, ‘Gibraltar’s Window into Deep Time’ was also part of the week’s programme of engagement. The occasion was well received and attended with many of the international artists and others linked to the project. Chris Stringer of the Natural History Museum supported the event too and connected with the Finlaysons.

Curated by Philippa Beale, who has been instrumental in the organisation of this event, the opening provided valuable networking opportunities and generated significant interest in Gibraltar.

The collaborative show and international cultural exchange remains at Noho Gallery in the West End until the 29th May, before arriving in Gibraltar for a public opening on the 1st July, running until 31st July. Further presentations and other educational initiatives will run alongside the event which will take place at the Gustavo Bacarisas Gallery. The cultural exchange will see international artists and others connected to the project travel to the Rock for the occasion.
