As part of His Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar general infrastructure investment for the Netball World Youth Cup 2025, a wooden sprung floor was purchased. The intention was for this to be used for the event at the Europa Sports Complex and then transferred to the Tercentenary Sports Hall (TSH) to replace the surface at that facility.
The floor at the TSH had served Gibraltar’s sporting community fantastically for over 21 years but had started to show signs of significant wear and tear. However, upon installation at the TSH the new floor raised concerns from a playability perspective. This was investigated with the supplier and after deliberations and numerous site visits a solution was derived which involved removing the floor and replacing it with a brand-new fixed version.
Minister for Sport, the Hon. Leslie Bruzon, has welcomed the completion of the works: “Whilst appreciative that the installation has caused some disruption at the tail of the season, the manner in which the timeline has panned out was beyond our control. To this end, I extend my sincerest thanks to the affected associations who understood the situation and worked very closely with the GSLA. A word of thanks also to GJBS, who have dealt with the matter very diligently and effectively.
"I think it is important to reinforce that at no point has the floor been unsafe; the issue was mainly from a playability perspective. Whilst this was not evident during the NWYC 2025, it became very noticeable for sports where the ball is in constant contact with the floor. Had there been any doubts about the safety of users, the facility would not have been made available for use.
"I am very glad to deliver another manifesto commitment and provide Gibraltar’s indoor sports, as well as the community at large, with an elite floor that will be hosting another international tournament at the end of June, with others in the pipeline. Investments such as these are crucial in providing our sports fraternity with the facilities they deserve and helps support our events-led tourism policy which is bearing fruit, as was evident with the recent Nations Cup of Pool.”
GSLA staff are now undertaking the marking of courts in time for school sports days, associations end of season events and the FIBA Europe Championship for Small Countries at the end of June.
