Gibraltar Cultural Services (GCS), on behalf of the Ministry for Culture, can confirm that the adult bumper cars attraction at the Gibraltar Fair will not open tonight following advice from the GHA Medical Director and Public Health.
The temporary closure follows a number of incidents involving small fragments becoming embedded in the eyes of users of the attraction. Up to 10 incidents involving teenagers have been reported to the GHA for treatment overnight.
The health and safety of the public remains the priority and a full inspection of the attraction will be carried out tomorrow morning. The bumper cars will only reopen once the necessary inspections have been completed and the attraction is deemed safe to operate.
Anyone who has used the attraction and is experiencing red or teary eyes is advised to attend the Accident and Emergency Department for assessment. Failure to seek medical attention may result in further damage to the eye, particularly to the cornea.
GCS, the GHA and Public Health will continue to liaise closely, and a further update will be provided following the inspection.
