Technical Services and Transport Plans for 2025 - 53/2025

January 27, 2025

The Ministry for Technical Services and Transport is planning a range of improvements over the coming months, some of which have already commenced.  These are under the following four general headings:

1)           STTPP

Under the Sustainable Traffic, Transport and Parking Plan the following projects are under way or will start shortly:

  • Europa Point relocation of existing bus stop, new planting, new crossing and new footpaths.
  • South Barrack Ramp – new footpath
  • Cycle Shared Space Link - Mid-Harbours to King's Wharf
  • Cycle Shared Space Link – Saluting Battery
  • Lower Castle Road - New footpath, bus stop and peed ramps
  • Devil's Tower Road - Proposed pedestrian guardrails - PHASE 2

2)      Highways Resurfacing Programme

The 2025 road resurfacing programme will encompass the following:

  • Governor’s Parade
  • Scud Hill
  • South Barracks Road northern section
  • King’s Yard Lane
  • Town Range from St Mary’s School to Prince Edward’s Road junction.
  • Devil’s Tower Road section
  • Grand Parade northern section

3)           Infrastructure Section, TSD

The Infrastructure Section of the Technical Services Department will soon be commencing the next phase of Main Sewer Relining works along Line Wall Road in the area directly behind John Macintosh Hall. These works aim to build in resilience, capacity and improve the structural integrity of this vital public asset. The project includes the relining of approximately 110 metres of sewer which means that on completion approximately 90% of the main trunk sewer within the City Wall will have been relined. This is a vital project to ensure our network continues to perform well into the future.

 4)      Engineering and Design

  • Rockfall protection

This project will see the installation of rock fall protection measures in the form of a low capacity catch fence. The works are required to ensure that AquaGib personal have safe access to Reservoirs 11 and 12 located directly below the Eastside Slopes. These two reservoirs form part of AquaGib’s potable water reserves and are considered critical infrastructure in light of the problems faced during the Powers Drive fire.

  • b) Clearance of debris on Eastside Catch Fences (Phase1)

These works relate to the removal of the debris caught behind the catch fences on the Eastside.

The Minister responsible for Technical Services and Transport, John Cortes, said: “These departments often work in the background but do essential work for Gibraltar.  The works we will be carrying our during the coming months will contribute to our sustainable transport aim, effect needed repairs to infrastructure, and increase safety in a number of areas.  Gibraltar is indebted to the excellent group of professional within Technical Services and Transport.  I am looking forward to seeing these works completed - while at the same time we are planning more improvements”.
