The Main Street phase of the Street Art programme to beautify the barriers and cannons is now complete. The project, led by Gibraltar Cultural Services on behalf of the Ministry of Culture, has seen a positive response with ongoing community engagement and support. 

Artist Kyrane Lia has completed 18 barriers, depicting a variety of historical and significant moments from Gibraltar’s history. The QR codes, providing an enhanced insight into each artwork, have seen international engagement with visitors from as far afield as Canada, the US, Brazil, Hong Kong, and all over Europe scanning to find out more about the project.

More details on the artist’s inspiration and the historical relevance of the events depicted are included. Other behind-the-scenes videos highlighting the creative process and Kyrane’s reflections from her childhood inspiration, by the historic Marshman murals at the Convent, to the challenges she has faced along the way are also available.

Chief Cultural Officer Seamus Byrne said: “Main Street, a bustling hub for both locals and visitors, now offers these vibrant murals as a visual gateway into Gibraltar’s rich past.”

Minister for Equality, Employment, Culture and Tourism, the Hon. Christian Santos GMD MP, said: “Kyrane’s creativity has brought some of Gibraltar’s historical moments to life in the centre of town for all to enjoy. This project offers a walk down memory lane with an insight into our past which has proven popular for residents and tourists.”
