Statement on Weather-Related Damage Recorded to Date - 49/2026

January 28, 2026

HM Government of Gibraltar provides the following update on damage recorded and response measures taken to date in relation to the current severe weather conditions.

Government Technical Services teams have been responding throughout the storm, dealing with significant debris on roads and working continuously to keep gullies clear in order to reduce the risk of flooding.

Damage recorded to date.

The Europa Sports Complex has been closed due to severe water ingress. The Gibraltar Sports and Leisure Authority has confirmed that the facility is being monitored. The MUGA and all outdoor GSLA facilities are also closed.

A number of classrooms and facilities at Bayside School have experienced flooding.

A tree has fallen outside the airport, and branches have come down at Line Wall Road, Devil’s Tower Road and Montagu Gardens.

As is often the case during exceptional weather events of this nature, some water ingress has been reported in a number of public buildings, including schools. Information continues to be collated so that all identified issues can be addressed as soon as conditions allow.

Road closures and travel advice.

HM Government of Gibraltar also urges members of the public to remain indoors unless travel is essential, in the interests of personal safety while severe weather conditions persist.

The road to Camp Bay has been closed following a suspected rock fall in the area.

Dudley Ward Tunnel remains closed to all vehicular traffic from the Blackstrap Cove lay-by to Europa Advance Road, with access to Both Worlds permitted for residents only. Motorcyclists, cyclists and PLET users are strongly advised to avoid the area entirely.

Hardings Way, leading to the University of Gibraltar, also remains closed due to loose hoarding and debris posing a risk to public safety.

Upper Rock is still closed to visitors, though not for residents.

The Royal Gibraltar Police continue to advise members of the public to travel only if absolutely necessary. Drivers are urged to slow down, brake earlier, leave greater distances between vehicles, and ensure lights and wipers are on at all times.

Support Available.

Support is available for those who require assistance with essential needs and have no alternative help from family, friends or neighbours. Elderly or vulnerable individuals who need help with urgent prescriptions or medication and have no other option available should call 111 in the first instance, where needs will be assessed and appropriate guidance or support provided.

The Care Agency is proactively contacting individuals on its risk register who are considered to be at highest risk, carrying out welfare checks to ensure vulnerable residents are safe and aware of the help available.

Infrastructure resilience.

Investment in major infrastructure in recent years has significantly improved Gibraltar’s resilience to heavy rainfall. Areas that previously suffered severe flooding during similar weather events, including Queensway, Wellington Front and Jumper’s Bastion, have not experienced the same impacts during this storm.

HM Government of Gibraltar would like to thank all technical services staff, emergency services personnel and other frontline workers who are continuing to work in very difficult conditions to assess damage, maintain public safety and minimise disruption. Their dedication and professionalism during this period of severe weather is greatly appreciated.

Further updates will be provided as conditions improve and assessments continue.
