Children at St Joseph’s Lower Primary School have begun an exciting new topic on Africa, linking their learning to real-life experiences of charity, kindness and global awareness.
The topic was introduced through a specially created video filmed in Africa by volunteers from the local charity Generous Hearts. The video gave children an insight into life in Africa and the important work the charity carries out to support families and communities both locally and abroad.
To further strengthen this meaningful link between learning and charity, Generous Hearts volunteers were invited into school to speak directly to the children. During their visit, the volunteers shared stories about their work, including their most recent mission to Africa, helping the children understand how acts of kindness can make a real difference to people’s lives.
As part of the project, the children are being encouraged to bring in unwanted toys, clothes and food items from home. These donations will be passed on to Generous Hearts, who will sell the items at their monthly car boot sale, raising vital funds to support families in need in Gibraltar and in Africa.
The pupils will then take part in discussions to decide how the money raised can be used and explore further ways they can continue to help those in need.
This initiative has provided a powerful opportunity for children to develop empathy, generosity and global awareness, while learning that even small actions can have a big impact.
