St Bernard’s Lower Primary School Champions Healthy Choices - 273/2025

April 14, 2025

St Bernard’s Lower Primary School recently concluded an exciting Project-Based Learning initiative centred around Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. Inspired by their reading, and particularly the revelation that Willy Wonka’s father was a dentist who believed sweets were harmful to teeth, Year 2 pupils explored the question: Does sugar affect our learning?

Through their work and hands-on activities, the children explored the impact of sugar on both their health and cognitive abilities. They analysed the sugar content in everyday snacks and were astonished by their findings. To deepen their understanding, Dental Therapist Amy Mesilio visited the school to highlight the importance of dental care. Meanwhile, Bayside Deputy Headteacher (Pastoral) and former Food and Nutrition subject leader, Mrs Analise Benitez, demonstrated how to prepare nutritious snacks, giving learners a first-hand taste of delicious and healthy alternatives.

Adding a creative twist to their project, the children composed an original song set to the catchy Oompa Loompa tune, reinforcing their message in a fun and memorable way. Their efforts culminated in an exciting show where they presented their findings to parents and experts alike.

Public Health representative Mr Kayron Pozo praised the pupils for their dedication and enthusiasm. To emphasise the importance of staying active, Mrs Natalie Hill led an invigorating workout session with parents. Mrs Benitez further engaged the audience with a hands-on demonstration of simple, healthy snack alternatives, reinforcing the significance of mindful eating.

The pupils of St Bernard’s Lower Primary School are determined to make a meaningful impact on their community by raising awareness of sugar’s effects and championing healthier lifestyles. Their project not only showcased their work and creativity but also empowered them to inspire change.
