The Gibraltar Health Authority (GHA) has confirmed that, as part of its robust routine water testing programs at John Mackintosh Wing, it may have identified the presence of Legionella bacteria in isolated water samples taken at the facility.

The GHA is very keen to stress there are no human cases of Legionnaires’ disease associated with this finding.

Further, the GHA emphasises that such laboratory preliminary results are not uncommon and always require validation and confirmation.

Nevertheless, and as an immediate precautionary measure, all affected water outlets have been temporarily taken out of use while definitive investigations are urgently repeated.

Alternative potable water supplies have already been procured and are being made available to ensure the continued safe operation of the facility and the convenience and wellbeing of all residents and staff.

Enhanced monitoring is also being undertaken, with residents and staff being closely observed for any symptoms consistent with Legionnaires’ disease, although it is important to reiterate that there no immediate safety concerns.

The Director of Public Health, Dr Helen Carter, said: “Whilst there are no human cases and the water testing results have yet to be validated by the GHA Laboratory, we are treating this matter with the seriousness it requires. The immediate precautionary steps taken are designed to protect residents, staff and visitors while the GHA undertakes its own in-house testing of the samples and, if necessary, is poised to investigate the source and complete the necessary remedial action. Residents’ safety remains the absolute priority.”
