The Ministry of Transport is pleased to announce the reopening of the road turning adjacent to the children’s park, between the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity and Duke of Kent House, as part of ongoing efforts to improve traffic flow within the Town Centre.
This improvement has been made possible through the removal and relocation of the existing motorcycle parking bay situated on the southern side of the park. The change allows for the reintroduction of a turning point, enabling vehicles to make more direct movements within the area.
Previously, vehicles travelling southbound and wishing to return northbound were required to follow a significantly extended and indirect route, travelling as far as Convent Ramp and continuing through Main Street (South), No. 6 Convent Place, Governor’s Lane, and Secretary’s Lane before rejoining their intended direction. This routing contributed to unnecessary congestion, longer journey times, and increased vehicle emissions within an already constrained road network.
The reinstatement of this turning facility will allow for more efficient vehicle circulation, reducing pressure on surrounding streets and improving overall traffic flow within the Town Centre. By minimising unnecessary vehicle movements, the measure will also contribute to lower fuel consumption and improved air quality, supporting wider environmental and urban mobility objectives.
To accommodate this change, the motorcycle parking previously located at this site has been relocated to nearby alternative locations, ensuring continued accessibility for users. This has resulted in a minimal net loss of parking provision, with a maximum of 3 spaces affected.
The Ministry has carefully considered the balance between maintaining parking availability and delivering meaningful traffic improvements, and will continue to monitor the area to ensure the effectiveness of the scheme.
Minister for Transport, the Hon John Cortes said: "The reopening of this turning point is a practical and effective measure to improve traffic circulation in the heart of our Town Centre. By allowing more direct vehicle movements, we are reducing unnecessary congestion and emissions while making our road network more efficient. At the same time, we have ensured that alternative motorcycle parking is provided nearby, striking the right balance between accessibility and traffic management."
