Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Mews, the new pensioner rental block at the Chatham Views Estate, was officially inaugurated today by the Chief Minister, the Hon Fabian Picardo KC MP, and the Minister for Housing and the University the Hon Pat Orfila MP.

The Chief Minister and the Minister unveiled a commemorative plaque marking the inauguration, before hosting a reception for residents in the block's day room.

Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Mews provides 44 rental flats for pensioners. The flats were allocated by public ballot on 27 August 2026, with the Housing Allocation Committee in attendance. All 44 tenants were already living in Government rental housing, and the homes they return will be reallocated to applicants on the housing waiting list.

The block has been designed around comfort, independence and community. Residents have a communal day room with its own kitchen and balcony, a clinic room for visiting health services, caretakers on site and a shared terrace with 360-degree views of Gibraltar.

HM Government of Gibraltar named the block in memory of Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, with the permission of the Royal Household, secured through the Office of the Governor.

The development continues the Government's programme of purpose-built homes for older residents, following the 73 flats at Charles Bruzon House and 69 flats at Sea Master Lodge, both allocated in 2017, and the complete refurbishment of Bishop Canilla House in 2019.

The Chief Minister, the Hon Fabian Picardo KC MP, said: "It is a privilege to open a building that carries Her late Majesty's name, and fitting that it is a home for the generation who lived through her reign alongside her. Our pensioners have given so much to Gibraltar, and they deserve homes built around their needs. Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Mews is exactly that."

The Minister for Housing, the Hon Pat Orfila MP, said: "It was a pleasure to welcome residents and their families to the day room today and to see how quickly they have made the Mews their home. Every one of these tenants has also handed back a Government flat, and those homes will now go to families on the waiting list. That is our housing stock being used in the best way possible. Finally, a big thank you to my team for all the hard work in ensuring the success of this project"
