New Light-Controlled Pedestrian Crossing on Queensway - 677/2025

September 23, 2025

The Ministry of Transport has announced the installation of a new light-controlled pedestrian crossing on Queensway Road, located between Edinburgh Estate and Midtown.

The crossing has been positioned where pedestrians are frequently observed crossing, reflecting the natural line of travel between the Europort area and the City Centre.

This installation forms part of the Government’s efforts to improve road safety and promote sustainable mobility across Gibraltar.

The location has been selected on a temporary basis until the completion of the ex-Rooke development, which will enable the creation of a more centralised and permanent pedestrian crossing between the southern crossing by King’s Bastion and the northern crossing at Midtown Coach Park. A proposed crossing adjacent to Midtown (by Xanit) has already been approved at full planning stage.

In the meantime, pedestrian safety barriers have been installed to encourage use of the new crossing, improving safety and ensuring a more efficient flow of both pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

The next phase will intelligently link this crossing with the existing southern and northern crossings to minimise congestion and reduce tailbacks along Queensway, especially during peak hours. This improvement will be implemented imminently.

This initiative follows stakeholder and public feedback and aligns with the objectives of both the Active Travel Strategy and the Sustainable Traffic, Transport and Parking Plan (STTPP), reaffirming the Government’s commitment to a safer, more pedestrian-friendly Gibraltar.

The project also supports the wider vision of promoting healthier, more active lifestyles by making walking safer and more accessible, while improving urban mobility for residents and visitors alike.

Motorists are advised to remain alert to the new crossing and to observe all traffic signals and pedestrian right-of-way.

Minister for Transport, the Hon. John Cortes, said:
"This new crossing is an important step in improving pedestrian safety and easing traffic flow along one of Gibraltar’s busiest roads. We know how important this route is for both residents and visitors, which is why we’ve taken action to make Queensway safer and easier to navigate. This new crossing responds directly to community feedback and has been designed to work intelligently with surrounding signals to keep traffic moving. We remain committed to implementing practical solutions that enhance mobility while keeping our community safe."
