New Apprenticeship Opportunity in British Sign Language (BSL) Interpretation - 764/2025

October 16, 2025

The Ministry of Equality, Employment, Culture and Tourism is pleased to announce the launch of a new apprenticeship programme designed to train individuals to become fully qualified British Sign Language (BSL) Interpreters.

This initiative forms part of the Government’s continued commitment to advancing accessibility, equality, and skills development across Gibraltar. The programme will provide apprentices with accredited training in BSL and an understanding of disability related matters through carefully designed modules, equipping them with the knowledge and competencies required to achieve full professional interpreter status.

The apprenticeship will also support the long-term objective of enabling qualified individuals to eventually offer their services on a private and freelance basis, helping to strengthen Gibraltar’s capacity for BSL interpretation across public and private settings.

The Minister for Equality, Employment, Culture and Tourism, the Hon Christian Santos GMD MP, said: “This apprenticeship is a vital step in enhancing inclusion and communication for the hearing impaired community in Gibraltar. It not only addresses a pressing need for more trained interpreters based locally but it also creates a pathway to a rewarding profession. I encourage those with a passion for accessibility and language to apply.”

The programme is open to individuals with a strong commitment to supporting accessibility and inclusion. Prior knowledge of British Sign Language is welcome but not essential, as full training will be provided.
