Multi-Agency Tabletop Exercise Held Ahead of Netball World Youth Cup 2025 - 588/2025

August 14, 2025

The Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the Netball World Youth Cup 2025 (NWYC25) Gibraltar, in partnership with the Office of Civil Contingencies, conducted a tabletop exercise last week to test and strengthen Gibraltar’s readiness for the upcoming international sporting event.

The exercise brought together key stakeholders from the emergency services, Gibraltar Health Authority, government departments, venue operators, security companies and support agencies to simulate various scenarios related to event safety, emergency response, public welfare and logistical coordination.

A key part of progression training, the exercise builds upon the security awareness training that was recently delivered by the Royal Gibraltar Police’s Counter Terrorism Security Adviser. This multi-agency exercise was designed to practise and evaluate the emergency response and joint working arrangements of the NWYC25 LOC, emergency services and other responding partners in response to a significant incident during the tournament.

Minister for Industrial Relations, Civil Contingencies and Sport, The Hon Leslie Bruzon MP, stated:
“This exercise is a vital step in ensuring Gibraltar is prepared to welcome the world in 2025. Hosting the Netball World Youth Cup is a moment of pride, and we are committed to delivering an event that is not only successful but also safe and well-managed. I am grateful to the Civil Contingencies Coordinator, Ivor Lopez, and the NWYC25 LOC for having jointly organised this important training event.”

Safety and Security Officer of the NWYC25 LOC, Brian Brooks, added:
“Working closely with the Office of Civil Contingencies allows us to align our event operations with national preparedness protocols. The insights gained today will directly support the delivery of a world-class sporting event.”

The Netball World Youth Cup 2025 will bring together the best under-21 netball talent from around the globe, placing Gibraltar on the international stage and highlighting its capacity to host major sporting events.

The Office of Civil Contingencies and LOC will continue liaising in the lead-up to the tournament to ensure a coordinated and effective approach.
