Ministry for Heritage Expands Local History Resources for Schools - 4/2025

January 09, 2026

The Ministry for Heritage has long supported primary schools with educational visits to Gibraltar’s historic sites, including the Moorish Castle, Northern Defences, Landport Defences, Trafalgar Cemetery, the Victorian Walk, Gibraltar’s Street Signs, and the World War II Tunnels.

To enhance classroom learning, the Ministry has now expanded its local history educational resources to cover topics frequently taught in primary schools. Each lesson is accompanied by carefully designed worksheets. In addition, educational visits and curated video materials are now included as part of the learning package.

Currently, the following topics are available online:

  • The Battle of Trafalgar
  • Victorian Gibraltar
  • The Great Siege of Gibraltar
  • Gibraltar During World War II

Additional topics, including Moorish Gibraltar and the Pirate Raid on Gibraltar, will be uploaded in the coming months.

Work in promoting knowledge of Heritage in our schools has included a recent INSET session by the Ministry’s Keith Sheriff, and visits of the Northern Defences led by Carl Viagas.

The Minister with responsibility for Education and Heritage, John Cortes, said: “We can never do enough to promote knowledge of our Heritage, in particular among our children, so that they can develop a sound knowledge of, and interest in, our past.  This online material is a fantastic resource for teachers and learners to use, not just in Gibraltar, but elsewhere too, wherever there is an interest in our history”.
