Minister for Equality, Employment, Culture and Tourism, The Hon. Christian Santos GMD MP hosted a session of the Gibraltar Youth Symposium this week. Along with guest speaker, Minister for Education, Sustainability, Climate Change, Heritage, Technical Services and Transport, The Hon. Prof John Cortes MBE MP, they heard the views of 25 young people in an open and constructive consultation.
As always, the Symposium provided a meaningful platform for young people to engage directly with decision-makers on key issues affecting their lives, acting as an important bridge between young people and Government, ensuring that youth perspectives are heard and genuinely considered in shaping the future of the community.
A wide range of topics were raised, to include the impact of banning mobile phones in schools, the influence of social media, the need for digital wellbeing strategies and school infrastructure improvements. Discussions were also had on the current half-day timetable, the potential lowering of the voting age and the provision of political and civic education within the community.
Minister Santos and representatives of the Youth Service highlighted how citizenship is being actively developed through the Symposium, with participants building confidence, strengthening their public speaking skills and engaging in meaningful dialogue with policymakers. The forum continues to nurture informed, confident and responsible young citizens who are prepared to contribute positively to Gibraltar’s future.
