The Minister for Education John Cortes this week met with the Head and Deputy Head Pupils from Gibraltar College, Westside and Bayside schools.  

Many educational and social issues were discussed, with the pupils sharing their impressions of their Education journey and commenting on matters that concern them. Subjects covered included examinations, mental health, behaviour and discipline, screen and mobile use, as well as wider matters such as the impact that the Covid pandemic had on these young people’s lives. A number of ideas for new initiatives were proposed by the pupils and will be followed up.

The Minister for Education, Prof John Cortes, said: “These Year 13 pupils were the first intake to the new schools and the first mixed gender intake into Secondary, and so marked a turning point in Education in Gibraltar. I really enjoyed talking to them about this and much more. I never fail to be impressed and inspired by our young people. Talking to them gives me a real insight into life in school and helps inform and develop ideas to further improve teaching and learning. We have agreed to meet again next term to follow up on our discussions.”

The pupils represented at the meeting were Ethan Todd (Head at Gibraltar College), Ellie Sarson (Head at Gibraltar College), Alae Tarrak (Vice Rep at Gibraltar College, Lily Rogers (Deputy Head at Bayside), Mireille Hook (Deputy Head at Bayside), Noah Segui (Deputy Head at Bayside), Anna McComb (Deputy Head at Bayside), Neela Cunningham (Head at Westside), Rebecca Byrne (Head at Westside), and Sarah Bensadon (Head at Bayside).
