Minister Cortes unveils Art Déco bench - 788/2024

November 27, 2024

In a moving demonstration of unity and artistic expression, the “Seats of Hope” art installation, created by local artist Ireana Schwock, has been unveiled at Europa Point by Minister for Environment John Cortes. This collaborative initiative between the Whole Wild World and GibSams charities brings a profound message of hope and resilience, connecting the importance of nature and the environment for our wellbeing. This first, inaugural seat was kindly sponsored by MH Bland, a tribute to their focus on mental health and emotional wellbeing.

The theme is marine conservation, a topic very befitting for an area which clearly displays the beauty of our Marine Reserve, the Southern Waters of Gibraltar.

The vibrant installation features an artistically crafted mosaic depiction of the common dolphin, a species found in Gibraltar waters. These seats represent a resting place for reflection, conversation, and support, highlighting the importance of nature for our wellbeing. Each seat in the collection is meticulously designed by Schwock, incorporating motifs inspired by Gibraltar’s rich natural landscape and local community spirit. Visitors to Europa Point are invited to engage with these meaningful art pieces, each evoking hope and healing through intricate design and nature symbolism.

The “Seats of Hope” project emerged from a shared vision to support mental health awareness and awareness of the importance of nature and environment for our mental health. GibSams, a leading support charity in Gibraltar offering a helpline and resources to those struggling with emotional distress, partnered with Whole Wild World to emphasise the importance of community spaces that encourage connection with nature, mental health dialogue, and reflection.

Local artist Ireana Schwock’s dedication to social causes, coupled with her passion for merging art with community welfare, has created a lasting gift that reflects hope for all. The installation transforms Europa Point into not only a scenic landmark but also a meaningful meeting place for introspection and support.

“Creating ‘Seats of Hope’ has been a journey of blending art with purpose,” said Ireana Schwock. “I wanted each seat to serve as a reminder that even in moments of difficulty there is a place to rest, to be seen, and to be heard. I hope visitors find peace and renewed strength here.”

Representatives from GibSams and Whole Wild World emphasised how public art can break down stigmas surrounding mental health by promoting dialogue and a sense of shared understanding.

The Minister for the Environment, the Hon Prof John Cortes, said: “I am delighted to inaugurate what I hope is the first of many benches to come, where we merge environmental awareness with eco-art, recycling and education. It is the perfect way to beautify areas in a sustainable manner and will present another tourist opportunity for marketing of Gibraltar’s unique sustainable tourism practices.  Well done to all involved.”

Call for Sponsors to Expand the Vision of Hope

Whole Wild World and GibSams are seeking sponsors to join this mission by funding additional “Seats of Hope” at Europa Point and beyond. By sponsoring a seat, individuals and organisations can contribute to the ongoing efforts to create spaces that inspire connection, support, and resilience within the community. Sponsors will have the unique opportunity to leave a lasting legacy, bringing hope and meaningful change to countless lives.
