The Minister for Health and Care, the Hon Gemma Arias-Vasquez, has this morning officially inaugurated the new One-Stop Shop Urology Clinic at St Bernard’s Hospital. The enhanced medical service will cater for all new referrals, urgent and routine, where patients will be seen in a dedicated clinical session.
Two consultants, Dr Paul Hughes and Dr James Allan, will be running the patient facility together, undertaking a range of diagnostic assessments during the same attendance. Typically, this will consist of diagnostic cystoscopies, the monitoring of urinary flow rates, plus instruction in catheter care and management.
Another of the features of the one-stop provision will be a walk-in clinical consulting room that will facilitate a same-day patient review of any medically urgent concerns.
Prostate Cancer Gibraltar Chairman, Joe Holiday, welcomed the much improved and streamlined service for all urology related ailments. He said: “We are delighted to be working closely with the medical professionals in the GHA. Our objective was to see a one-stop shop urology clinic sited in the hospital, with all the required facilities and equipment in the same location, thus improving efficiency when attending to patients, who will also benefit from much quicker medical attention.”
Mr Holiday also paid tribute to his predecessor in the charity, Derek Ghio, for his great commitment and dedication over the past two years, in initiating a project that has now come to fruition.
Michelle Tosso of the Kusuma Trust reiterated their continuous support for healthcare initiatives in Gibraltar. She said: "In 2014, we partnered with Prostate Cancer Gibraltar to fund state of the art equipment for a new Prostate Cancer Clinic at St Bernard's Hospital. Ten years on, we are delighted to see this initiative evolve and to continue our partnership with funding for a Medi-Matic 2 dynamic examination couch, which will have a wide range of clinical uses and form an integral part of the new One-Stop Shop Urology Clinic. We would like to extend our thanks to all those at PCG and the GHA who have made this concept a reality."
GHA Director General, Kevin McGee, said: “Our new one-stop urology clinic is a wonderful addition to the GHA’s expanding scope of specialized medical treatment options. The partnership with the Prostate Cancer charity demonstrates how we can work successfully with established community groups to improve the targeted healthcare afforded to different types of patients in our tireless efforts to ensure they receive the most effective treatments possible.”
The Minister for Health and Care, the Hon Gemma Arias-Vasquez, said: “I was delighted to officially inaugurate our new One-Stop Shop Urology Clinic this morning. There is greater demand for medical attention for prostate related ailments and a one stop clinic to deal with these conditions will go a long way toward meeting the growing demand. I would like to thank Prostate Cancer Gibraltar and the Kusuma Trust for jointly contributing towards this magnificent facility which I am sure will help so many in Gibraltar.”
