Llanito was featured in a language conference held in Brussels on 22 September 2026.

The event hosted at Wales House was co-organised by the Gibraltar Mission to the EU in collaboration with the Brussels offices of the Channel Islands, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, as well as with the French region of Brittany.

The theme of the event was ‘Words and Wealth: The Dynamic Link Between Language and Regional Economic Growth’.

Gibraltar was represented in a panel discussion on the societal impact of languages by Dominic Lopez from the Ministry for Heritage, who spoke about the importance of protecting both the intangible and tangible aspects of our heritage in benefit of economic and social wellbeing. Ahead of the panel Dominic also took part in an expert roundtable discussion where he touched upon all aspects of the evolution of Llanito and how this compares to the experience of regenerating native and minority languages in the other jurisdictions represented.

This is second time that Llanito has been featured at this annual conference which is organised to coincide with events surrounding the European Day of Languages.
