The Government has confirmed its decision to relocate the new Gibraltar College to Europa Point, after full consultation with College staff, in move that will provide the best possible learning and teaching environment in the shortest possible timeframe.
The complexities of the Cross of Sacrifice site were indeed proving problematic, due to the sensitivities involved and the fact that the College would have formed part of a wider residential development. Europa Point, already being a student area and which is serviced by the excellent free local bus service every 15 minutes on weekdays, is a far more suitable location for the new College.
There will be no delays to the site’s development arising from this decision, and the costs will still be met by the developer’s premium as agreed. The plot at Europa Point is available immediately and the plans converting the requirements from the former site to this one are well advanced. Both the Government and the College staff are delighted with the new location and plans.
Mr Bossino’s criticism is purely reactive and entirely self-serving. Having nothing positive to offer of his own, he is simply piggybacking on the work of Gibraltar’s journalists and attempting to pass it off as holding the Government to account. What could be more politically dishonest than that?
On the new College, the Government will be accountable to the teachers, staff and students who will benefit from a new, modern campus in close proximity to the University and the excellent sports facilities at Europa Point, both of which the GSLP/Liberal Government is proud to have delivered.
The Minister for Education, the Hon John Cortes, said: ‘This GSLP/Liberal Government is incredibly proud of our track record in our Education Revolution and we are determined to continue to deliver for Gibraltar’s educators and learners. If it is political dishonesty the GSD and Mr Bossino are looking for, they should look in the mirror.’
