HM Government of Gibraltar has expressed its deepest condolences following the devastating forest fires in Almería and the tragic loss of life.

The Chief Minister, the Hon Fabian Picardo KC MP, has written personally to the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, and to the President of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, to convey his condolences on behalf of the Government and people of Gibraltar.

The Chief Minister said:

“The people of Gibraltar are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life caused by the devastating fires in Almería.

“Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of those who have lost their lives, with those who have been injured or displaced, and with all the communities affected by this terrible tragedy.

“We also pay tribute to the emergency services, firefighters and volunteers working in extremely difficult and dangerous conditions.

“Andalusia is our closest neighbour and its people are our friends. At this time of profound sadness, Gibraltar stands in solidarity with the people of Almería and with the whole of Andalusia.”
