HM Customs Gibraltar celebrate the 275th anniversary of their formation on Wednesday.

On 14th May 1750 the first officers dedicated to the collection of import duty used their newly acquired powers to levy this tax on wine imported for the garrison. This date therefore marks the formal institutionalisation of a Customs Authority in Gibraltar.

To mark this milestone a number of events are scheduled to take place during the day and into the evening:

• A breakfast for retired officers will be held at the Customs Recreational Club at 10:00am.
• A guard will be formed by a contingent of Customs Officers outside Number 6 Convent Place at 12:00pm. They will be inspected by the Chief Minister.
• A Gala Dinner for staff and dignitaries will be held that evening at Grand Battery House.
• The Moorish Castle will be lit in blue on the night in the organisation’s honour and as a mark of gratitude on behalf of the Government and people of Gibraltar.

HM Customs would like to acknowledge the support of HM Government Gibraltar in arranging these commemorations.

The Collector of Customs, John Payas, said: ‘This is an important milestone for HM Customs Gibraltar as we remember our history and honour the individuals that carved our department into the modern law enforcement organisation it is today. It is also a time to acknowledge our achievements and thank the serving officers for their continued resolve to safeguard the community. I’d also like to thank HM Government of Gibraltar for their support in making these celebrations possible and for the significant investment in HM Customs in recent years.’

The Chief Minister, the Hon Fabian Picardo, who also has Ministerial responsibility for HM Customs Gibraltar, said: ‘This is an important opportunity for the Government and people of Gibraltar to thank Officers past and present for their vital work. Customs Officers are not only responsible for the collection of duty at the border but play an essential role in law enforcement and the fight against the illegal international drugs trade. In this, they can always count on the support of the Government in providing the resources and investment they require to continue to do an excellent job on land and at sea.’
