GSD support for GFRS Claim would cost tens of millions - 151/2026

March 09, 2026

HM Government of Gibraltar is surprised to note the Opposition’s support for the GFRS pay claim that would add £500,000 to their salary bill alone, given the GSD’s persistent alleged concern about the cost of public services and their assessment of the health of Gibraltar’s public finances.

The supportive presence of Hon Ms Ladislaus and Hon Mr Sacarello at the Unite demonstration outside No6 Convent Place has been interpreted as supportive of the Unite claims for the GFRS.

Indeed, the maths that the GSD have failed to account for, which is even more surprising considering Mr Clinton’s supposed financial astuteness, is that if the GFRS claim were to be agreed to, the same would also have to be granted to every night shift worker across the public service, at a cost of millions of pounds to the taxpayer every year.

The reality is that the GFRS are already fairly compensated for their night shifts in their all-inclusive salaries, and the GSD are saying that they would happily place that indefensible, generational burden on taxpayers in order to buy a few votes from those who already receive salaries which are fair.

The GSD need to make up their minds.

Either the Government is already spending too much on the public service, as Mr Clinton says, or we need to increase this by further millions of pounds, as Ms Ladislaus and Mr Sacarello are suggesting.

The GSD cannot have it every way if they are ever going to be seen as serious.

The GSD has to work out whether it ever wants to be seen as a serious party of Government again or whether it will continue to act like an amateurish group of charlatans who support any and all claims for more money whilst also pretending to be the ones that would control the cost of public finances.

They cannot pretend to be all things to all men.

The public will see through it.

They would come unstuck in the first week of Governing!
