The Government today announced the rollout of an enhanced Derelict Vehicle Cleaning Campaign, a coordinated effort to remove abandoned and non-roadworthy vehicles from Gibraltar’s streets, improve public safety, and relieve pressure on heavily constrained parking areas.
Gibraltar currently has over 45,000 registered vehicles but only 14,654 public parking spaces, contributing to congestion and reduced availability for residents. Enforcement teams have also identified that 18 percent of vehicles (over 9,500) are without a valid MOT, increasing the likelihood of them being left unused or abandoned in public areas.
To address these issues, the Ministry for Transport, DVLD, Gibraltar Car Parks, the Royal Gibraltar Police, and Britannia are working together to identify, tag, and remove derelict vehicles across all parking zones. The campaign is already underway, with five abandoned motorbikes already removed from a small bay on Devil’s Tower Road.
Recent legal changes make it faster and easier to remove vehicles from the public highway. A vehicle may now be removed if it:
• Has no valid MOT, OR
• Appears derelict, OR
• Has remained in the same spot for more than 28 days.
Following Britannia’s established cleaning schedule, owners will receive the usual 48-hour notice to move their vehicles for street cleaning. Any remaining vehicles will be checked, and any meeting one or more of the three conditions above will be removed.
Owners should be aware of the following charges:
• Derelict vehicle fine: £200 (reduced to £100 if paid within 14 days)
• Tow fee: £60
• Storage: £15 per day
Those who no longer want their vehicle can avoid all costs by handing the logbook to the RGP (200 72500) or Gibraltar Car Parks (200 49202) and signing the vehicle over for disposal free of charge.
A short grace period will allow owners to regularise their MOT status. Vehicles displaying proof of a booked MOT appointment will not be removed during this period. Please visit portal.egov.gi to check your MOT status or book an appointment online. For assistance, use the eGov live chat service or visit the Customer Care Hub at 323 Main Street.
The Government urges all vehicle owners to “Book it or Scrap it” and support the ongoing effort to keep Gibraltar clean, safe, and accessible for all.
The Minister for Transport, the Hon John Cortes, said: “This campaign is about taking responsibility for our shared public spaces. By dealing with abandoned and non-roadworthy vehicles, we can free up parking, improve safety, and make our streets cleaner and more welcoming. There will also be gains for air quality as vehicles without MOTs tend to be more polluting. I encourage everyone to check their vehicle documentation, book their MOT if it’s overdue, or dispose of any vehicle they no longer need. Together, we can make a real difference to our community.”
