The Government notes with concern the statements made by Opposition Member Damon Bossino in relation to the new Gibraltar College. His comments once again demonstrate a lack of understanding of the issues at hand and of the processes that form part of good governance.

The suggestion that the plans for the College result from a “haphazard and incompetent approach” is both unfounded and irresponsible. At last week’s Development and Planning Commission (DPC) meeting, the Minister for Education presented in detail the considerable educational benefits of the Europa Point site. The DPC, having examined these matters, voted decisively in favour of the project. Mr Bossino’s remarks therefore not only dismiss the clear advantages of the new site, but also cast unwarranted doubt on the professionalism and integrity of the Commission itself.

The facts are clear. The Europa Point site is Government-owned land, immediately available for development, allowing the replacement of an ageing facility without delay. The site provides approximately 1,000m² more space than the original location, avoids the controversy of relocating the Cross of Sacrifice, and most importantly permits the design of a facility tailored specifically for educational use. This design has been developed in consultation with the College’s teaching staff, whose input will continue to guide the final plans.

The new College will bring major benefits, including closer synergies with the University of Gibraltar, proximity to sporting facilities, and an enhanced environment for first-choice students, second-chance learners and adult education. It follows the Government’s proven record of delivery in education, with eleven new or fully refurbished schools already completed. This track record stands in clear contrast to the position of the Opposition, which continues to rely on criticism while offering no credible alternative.

It is also notable that Mr Bossino has once again chosen to intervene in an area outside his brief, displacing his party colleague responsible for education. This pattern, observed on other occasions, reflects a disregard for proper responsibilities in the pursuit of political attention.

The Minister for Education, the Hon Prof John Cortes, said:
“Mr Bossino’s comments are a clear example of form over substance. He has ignored the facts presented to the DPC and the strong support given to the project by staff and professionals. The new Gibraltar College will transform opportunities for our young people and adult learners alike. The Opposition’s attempt to undermine this achievement shows no concern for students or for the future of education. What is evident is that while this Government delivers, the GSD would prefer to see progress stalled.”
