Government Outlines Ongoing Review to Strengthen Justice Legislation - 177/2025

March 17, 2025

HM Government of Gibraltar is actively engaged in a comprehensive review of key justice legislation to ensure our laws remain robust, fair, and responsive to the needs of our community and policing.

This work, which has been underway for some time, follows consultations with local stakeholders, including the Royal Gibraltar Police (RGP), the Office of Parliamentary Counsel (OPC), the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), and the Parole Board, as well as discussions with the UK Ministry of Justice. The focus is on addressing concerns raised through recent cases and expert input, including around sentencing, parole processes, and protections against sexual offences and crimes involving children.

While specific details will be refined through continued engagement, the Government is committed to ensuring these updates reflect Gibraltar’s evolving needs and maintain alignment with international standards.

Minister for Justice, Trade and Industry, the Hon Nigel Feetham KC MP, said: “We have been working with stakeholders to review how we strengthen our justice system, building on insights from local cases and broader expertise. This is a considered effort to protect our community and ensure our laws keep pace with today’s challenges. We will continue to engage with stakeholders as these discussions progress, ensuring a balanced and effective outcome. Updates will be provided as this work advances.”
