Europa Point Trinity Lighthouse, one of Gibraltar’s most distinctive historic landmarks, has officially opened its doors to the public, offering visitors the opportunity to discover the history and significance of one of Gibraltar’s most strategically positioned sites.

Built in 1841, the lighthouse was vested in Trinity House by an Act of Parliament of 1838. It is the only Trinity Lighthouse located outside the British Isles and is the southernmost Trinity Lighthouse, standing at the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar, the gateway between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. Its position provides a remarkable vantage point of one of the world’s most historically significant maritime routes, through which more than 300 ships navigate each day.

The opening marks an important addition to Gibraltar’s tourism offering, allowing visitors to experience the lighthouse and its surroundings while gaining a deeper understanding of Gibraltar’s maritime heritage and its enduring strategic importance.

The Gibraltar Heritage Trust has been appointed by Trinity House to manage organised group tours of the lighthouse for members of the public, as well as to facilitate events at the site. The tours will provide visitors with an opportunity to explore the lighthouse and learn about its history, its role in maritime navigation and the wider significance of its location.

Minister for Equality, Employment, Culture and Tourism, the Hon. Christian Santos GMD MP, said:

“Engagement between the Tourism and Trinity House teams started over two and a half years ago and it is wonderful to see the project come to fruition. This is yet another interesting site to add to our tourism portfolio.

“The opening of Trinity Lighthouse also presents an opportunity to develop a wider visitor experience around Europa Point, connecting it with a collection of nearby sites that reflect Gibraltar’s military, maritime, religious and cultural heritage by incorporating points of interest such as Harding’s Battery, the Interpretation Centre, the General Sikorski Memorial, Nun’s Well, the Shrine of Our Lady of Europe and the Europa Point foreshore.”

With its commanding views of the Strait, its connection to Gibraltar’s maritime history and its proximity to several other important heritage attractions, Trinity Lighthouse offers visitors a new perspective on an area that has played a significant role in Gibraltar’s history.
