The Chief Minister Fabian Picardo has written to the family of the late Rt Hon Sir Murray Stuart-Smith upon learning the sad news of his passing this January aged 97.

From 2007 and following a distinguished legal career, Sir Murray served as the President of the Court of Appeal of Gibraltar, the most senior judge of the judiciary. In 2012 he was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG) for services to justice in Gibraltar.

The Chief Minister, the Hon Fabian Picardo KC MP, said: "Sir Murray was highly regarded as a member, and later President, of our Court of Appeal, whose knowledge and invaluable experience contributed greatly to our judicial system. Gibraltar will always be grateful for his service. I have written today to his children and grandchildren to express the sincerest condolences of the Government and people of Gibraltar on learning the sad news of his passing."
