The Gibraltar Port Authority has partnered with Lloyd’s Maritime Academy, the expert in providing a life-long learning pathway for maritime professionals, to deliver a series of 2-day workshops at Bleak House for Gibraltar Port Authority staff and its key partners on the topic of Port Waste Management in Gibraltar. 

The workshops were designed to look at a variety of issues including the Codes and Conventions which apply to ports and vessels, and how compliance can be achieved with Waste Management Regulations, Codes and International Conventions.  A session was also dedicated to the practical aspects of Waste Management services in a busy international port environment and how they can be managed safely, effectively and efficiently at the ship/shore interface. 

In addition to the workshops a fully interactive seminar for ship agents was also held at the Gibraltar University, concentrating on the practical aspects and challenges of dealing safely and efficiently with Port Waste management.

Manuel Tirado, CEO and Captain of the Port has been very pleased with the feedback received from participants and added that “It was the Port Authority's goal to ensure its staff and partners alike had all the information and knowledge available to allow them to deliver first class services to their clients, whilst at the same time, ensuring compliance with both local and international rules and regulations”. 

Captain Kevin Richardson, Lloyd’s Maritime Academy’s certified Course Director, was delighted that Lloyd’s Maritime Academy had been given the opportunity to work with the Gibraltar Port Authority in developing a training programme specific to its needs and stated: “It was very obvious to me that the Gibraltar Port Authority is strongly committed to the continuous professional development of its staff and moreover to consulting with and involving its key stakeholders in all aspects of port operations issues as well as the future plans for the Port. It was a pleasure to work with all delegates over the course of the week and to listen to their experiences and concerns about Port Waste Management, a subject that should concern all ports on a global basis”.

Captain Richardson also looked forward to further collaborations between Lloyd’s Maritime Academy and the Gibraltar Port Authority in the future.

Minister for the Port, the Hon Gilbert Licudi QC MP, added that the delivery of these workshops and seminars by a prestigious Academy was further evidence of the Gibraltar Port’s efforts in maintaining its reputation as a Centre of Maritime Excellence and he was also very pleased to see that the Port’s partners and stakeholders were also part of this effort.
