Gibraltar Joins Stoptober 2024 to Help Smokers Quit for Good - 623/2024

September 30, 2024

This October, Gibraltar is proud to join the global Stoptober campaign, encouraging smokers to quit for 28 days and beyond. Supported by Public Health Gibraltar and the Gibraltar Health Authority, this initiative is part of a broader effort to improve public health and reduce smoking-related illnesses.

Stoptober, inspired by the successful NHS campaign in the UK, provides a perfect opportunity for smokers to take the first step towards a healthier, smoke-free life. Research shows that if you stop smoking for 28 days, you are five times more likely to quit for good.

Stopping smoking in pregnancy: Smoking during pregnancy is known to increase the risk of complications such as premature birth, stillbirth and low birth weight. Protecting a baby from tobacco smoke is one of the best things you can do to give a child a healthy start in life. Smoking is an addiction, and it can be difficult to stop, but it’s never too late to quit.

Public Health Gibraltar and the GHA offer a variety of support services, including:

  • Online Resources and FREE support: Smokers will have access to a range of free resources, including the NHS Quit Smoking app, which offers daily tips, support, and motivation to help you stay on track.
  • GHA Smoking Cessation Clinic: The clinic is located in the PCC and helps smokers quit by giving them personalised advice, support, and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) products, such as patches, gum, and lozenges.
  • New booking system! You can phone 200 52441 or use the Gov.gi e-service platform to schedule an appointment right now. The service can now be accessed directly through any employee of GHA, who can schedule an appointment for you and book you in right away.
  • Social Support Group (Facebook): The “Gibraltar Quit Smoking Support Group” on Facebook provides support, practical advice and share success stories from those who have successfully quit smoking.

The Director of Public Health, Dr Helen Carter, said: “Stoptober is a fantastic opportunity for smokers in Gibraltar to take control of their health. Quitting smoking has immediate and long-term health benefits. Within one year your risk of having a heart attack has halved. With the help from the GHA smoking cessation clinic, you are three times more likely to have a successful quit attempt than trying to quit on your own. It’s never too late to try to quit and we are here to support you.”
