Gibraltar International Airport to be renamed Joshua Hassan Gibraltar International Airport - 538/2026

July 07, 2026

HM Government of Gibraltar has today announced that Gibraltar International Airport will be renamed Joshua Hassan Gibraltar International Airport.

The announcement was made by the Chief Minister during his Budget address in Parliament earlier today.

Sir Joshua Hassan is rightly remembered as the Father of the Gibraltarians. His leadership and lifelong service to Gibraltar helped shape the modern Gibraltar we know today.

The renaming of the airport will serve as a lasting tribute to Sir Joshua’s extraordinary contribution to Gibraltar and to generations of Gibraltarians.

The Chief Minister consulted the Leader of the Opposition on the proposed change of name who indicated he was supportive of the proposal.

The Chief Minister, the Hon Fabian Picardo KC MP, said: “Sir Joshua Hassan was the Father of the Gibraltarians and one of the towering figures in our history. It is entirely fitting that Gibraltar’s gateway to the world should carry the name of a man whose life’s work was dedicated to protecting our people, defending our identity and building the Gibraltar we are all proud to call home.”
