Gibraltar Electricity Authority statement on power outage affecting Eastside - 632/2025

September 03, 2025

The Gibraltar Electricity Authority (GEA) confirms that a high-voltage power outage occurred at approximately 15:15 on Monday 2nd September 2025, affecting electricity supply along Devil’s Tower Road (from St. Theresa’s Church eastbound), Devil’s Tower Camp, Beach View Terraces, Eastern Beach Road and Hassan Centenary Terraces.

An initial assessment pointed to a fault in an underground High Voltage (HV) cable. Following immediate insulation testing, all cable sections between the affected substations — nine in total — were systematically assessed and ruled out. The fault has been isolated to the section of infrastructure between St. Theresa’s Church and the former Waterport Power Station, a distance of approximately 1.5 kilometres.

While the precise cause and location of the fault have yet to be determined, GEA technical teams are continuing their work on the ground. Further diagnostic testing is being carried out to accurately locate the HV fault and understand its root cause.

The Gibraltar Electricity Authority apologises to all customers for the inconvenience caused by this outage. This type of fault was not foreseeable and is being treated as a matter of priority. Restoring power safely and efficiently remains the Authority’s top priority.

Power was restored to all customers at 19:03hrs on Monday.
