Thirty-six ‘A’ Level students from schools across Gibraltar have successfully completed the 2026 GHA Summer Placement Programme.

Students from Bayside, Westside, Prior Park, the Hebrew School and Gibraltar College took part in the popular initiative, which aims to encourage young Gibraltarians to consider careers within the local healthcare sector.

A certificate presentation ceremony was held at St Bernard’s Hospital, attended by Minister for Health Gemma Arias-Vasquez and GHA Director General Dr Paul Bosio.

The programme has two main objectives: to inspire students who are considering a future career in healthcare after completing their university studies, and to provide them with meaningful, practical experience in a real clinical environment.

Over the course of the two-week placements, students shadowed healthcare professionals and gained first-hand insight into a range of clinical and non-clinical settings. The experience allowed participants to explore their areas of interest, develop early professional relationships with GHA staff and gain a better understanding of the demands and responsibilities involved in working in healthcare.

The GHA worked closely with the participating schools to select suitable candidates, taking into consideration their academic performance, interests and career aspirations.

Students interested in medical, pathology and dentistry placements were required to demonstrate a strong academic record. However, the programme also highlighted the wide range of career opportunities available within healthcare, including ophthalmology, radiology, pharmacy, nursing, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, midwifery and other allied health professions.

Nursing students had the opportunity to gain experience across most of the wards at St Bernard’s Hospital. The GHA also highlighted the importance of non-clinical roles, with opportunities available in areas such as IT, data analysis and administration.

The placements also provide an important educational benefit, allowing students to gain a realistic understanding of their chosen profession. This experience can help them determine whether a particular degree and career path is the right choice for them, while also addressing any doubts or uncertainties they may have.

GHA Director General Dr Paul Bosio said he was delighted by the strong response from young Gibraltarians to the Summer Placement Programme.

He described the initiative as an important stepping stone towards quality career opportunities, adding that the experience provides participants with valuable insight and helps them make informed decisions about their future careers.

Minister for Health, the Hon Gemma Arias-Vasquez, said: “This programme is an important part of our longer-term strategy to align the aspirations of our young people with the future workforce needs of Gibraltar. The summer programme gives students early exposure to the wide range of careers available within the GHA, allowing them to make informed academic choices while helping us develop the next generation of local healthcare professionals".
