GHA marks International Nurses Day - 347/2026

May 12, 2026

The Gibraltar Health Authority is celebrating International Nurses Day by commemorating the remarkable contribution of nurses across the GHA. Gibraltar joins this year’s global celebration under the theme, “Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives.”

Every day, nurses across the GHA play a vital role in both saving and improving lives. They positively impact the quality of health services, deploying expertise and experience while delivering compassionate, patient-centred care to the community.

This year’s theme highlights the importance of empowering nurses through the right support, resources, and professional development to enable them to deliver the highest standards of care. Nurses contribute to shared governance and drive quality initiatives, displaying confidence and authority to influence patient care and clinical decision-making.

To commemorate the occasion, the Minister for Health and Care the Hon Gemma Arias-Vasquez, GHA Director General Dr Paul Bosio and Acting Director of Nursing Romina Moreno have unveiled a visual display within St Bernard’s Hospital recognising the contribution of nurses across the GHA.

The artwork, centred around the message “Nurses are at the heart of our healthcare system”, symbolises the compassion, strength, and care nurses bring to patients and families every day. The design reflects the diversity of the nursing workforce and serves as a lasting tribute to the vital role nurses play across all areas of the GHA.

GHA Director General, Dr Paul Bosio said: “On the occasion of International Nurses Day, I want to express my sincere thanks and admiration to all our nurses for the extraordinary contribution they make to the GHA. Our nursing workforce is committed to continuous professional development, demonstrating adaptability in response to the ever-changing healthcare landscape. They continually strive to provide all patients with the highest standard of safe, effective, and compassionate care.”

Minister for Health and Care, the Hon Gemma Arias-Vasquez said: “International Nurses Day is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the extraordinary contribution nurses make to our community every day. Nurses are at the heart of the GHA, delivering compassionate, high-quality care and supporting patients and families through some of life’s most important moments.

“I was delighted to unveil this visual display this morning alongside the GHA Director General and Acting Director of Nursing as a tribute to the dedication of our nursing workforce and as a reminder of the vital role nurses play across our GHA every single day.

“The Government remains committed to supporting and investing in our nurses, recognising that empowered nurses are essential to delivering the highest standards of care and building a sustainable GHA for the future. I look forward to talking more about nursing numbers during the course of this year’s budget debate.”
