For the first time in their history, the Gibraltar Fire and Rescue Service takes great pleasure in welcoming fourth-generation Firefighter Julian Avellano to their ranks.
Julian proudly follows in the footsteps of his Great Grandfather Mr. A Avellano (who joined the then Gibraltar Fire Brigade in 1946), his Grandfather Mr. A Avellano (who joined The City Fire Brigade in 1968) and his Father C. Avellano (currently in the Service).
The eight-week Firefighter Foundation and Development Programme (FFDP) at The Fire Service College, Moreton-In-Marsh, UK, presents a tough challenge for all new recruits, with continuous mental and physical assessments throughout. These include assessments on basic core skills, such as ladders, pumps, hose drills, knots and lines, and the even more rigorous Breathing Apparatus and Compartment Fire Behaviour Training. Additionally, training has also been received in Road Traffic Collisions, including the release of trapped persons and subsequent application of emergency first aid, by applying the knowledge and previously acquired skills in the Casualty Care for Emergency Services module.
Firefighter Avellano will now complete a two-week diving course for sub surface diver rescue, and a further two weeks of Rope Rescue, Level One Operator’s course.
The Senior Management Team wish our new fire fighter a safe and successful career with the Fire Service.
Chief Fire Officer Colin Ramirez said: “This is such an extremely proud moment for this young Fire Fighter and for his loved ones, but above everything else, this is a well-deserved appointment based on hard work, persistence, and the drive to achieve his objectives. Firefighter Avellano has pushed through every challenge that has come his way and it was with great pride that I witnessed his graduation as Firefighter at the Fire Service College together with his loved ones and our Head of Operations. I truly hope he has a long, safe, and successful career with the GFRS.”
The Minister for the Fire Service, the Hon Leslie Bruzon, said: “Congratulations to Firefighter Julian Avellano on becoming the Gibraltar Fire and Rescue Service’s first fourth-generation firefighter! Following a proud family legacy, Julian’s achievement reflects his dedication, resilience, and excellence. Completing rigorous training at the Fire Service College is a testament to his commitment. Wishing him a long, safe, and successful career.”
