HM Customs, in a joint operation with WILDLIFE Gibraltar, acted swiftly following intelligence that a local resident was unlawfully keeping a small crocodilian at their property.

A search warrant was granted and successfully executed, during which the animal was discovered housed in a man-made enclosure on the premises. The owner was completely cooperative when handing over the crocodilian.

A representative from WILDLIFE Gibraltar was present to ensure the safe handling and removal of the animal. The crocodilian was immediately transported to the Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park, where it is now being cared for in a secure, species-appropriate environment. The crocodilian, a Cuvier’s Dwarf Caiman, is currently under a metre in length and can grow up to 1.2 metres.

The operation highlights the importance of adhering to the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES) regulations and the ongoing commitment to wildlife protection. This serves as a useful reminder to the public of the legality of importing these types of animals into Gibraltar. It is essential to consult the CITES Appendices and contact the Environmental Agency Gibraltar to obtain the necessary permits and ensure compliance with all legal requirements.
