The Chief Minister, the Hon Fabian Picardo KC MP, has expressed his deep sadness at the passing of historian and author Tito Benady MBE.

The Chief Minister said: “Tito Benady was one of Gibraltar’s great historians and one of the Rock’s most respected cultural figures. Through his books, research and public work, he dedicated much of his life to preserving and promoting Gibraltar’s history, heritage and identity.

“His contribution to public life went far beyond his writing. Tito helped generations of Gibraltarians better understand our past and appreciate the richness of our community and culture. His work will continue to educate and inspire for many years to come.

“In recognition of his outstanding contribution to Gibraltar’s culture and heritage, he was awarded the Ministry of Culture Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022, in addition to being appointed MBE for services to local history.

“He also co-founded the Gibraltar Heritage Journal, supported the publication of countless works on Gibraltar through Gibraltar Books, and became widely respected both locally and internationally for his scholarship and commitment to heritage.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Gibraltar, I extend my sincere condolences to Tito’s family, friends and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.”
