Completion of New Footpaths and Improvements at South Barrack Ramp - 241/2025

April 04, 2025

The Ministry of Transport is pleased to announce the completion of new footpaths at South Barrack Ramp, following the conclusion of a temporary concrete barrier trial on this road which was initially installed in 2022. This trial was implemented to assess the necessity of dedicated pedestrian pathways, and its success, together with requests from residents of the area, has led to the construction of two brand-new footpaths in an area that previously lacked this type of infrastructure. The Ministry of Transport engaged and consulted with stakeholders in this area as well as receiving feedback from the three South District Constituency Meetings which were held last year.

The newly constructed footpaths significantly enhance pedestrian accessibility, particularly benefiting residents of South Barracks Ramp. Prior to these improvements, residents were required to access their homes directly via the active roadway, posing clear safety concerns. The introduction of these footpaths marks a major step forward in improving pedestrian safety and mobility in the area.

Additionally, as part of the broader enhancements the existing bus stop at Schomberg has been improved through the extension of the footpath, ensuring a safer and more convenient access platform to access or disembark the bus. Furthermore, a dedicated motorcycle bay has been created, offering much-needed parking for motorcyclists where previously none existed in this immediate area.

To further enhance the aesthetics and overall environment of South Barrack Ramp, a new plane tree has been planted at the base of the ramp which will mature and grow in future. This initiative aligns with the Government’s ongoing commitment to urban beautification and sustainable infrastructure development.

These upgrades form part of the recommendations contained in the Gibraltar’s Active Travel Strategy and the Sustainable Traffic, Transport, and Parking Plan (STTPP), reinforcing the Government’s commitment to enhancing pedestrian safety and improving public infrastructure where it physically allows to do so. By prioritising the development of safe and accessible pedestrian routes, the Government continues to work towards a more pedestrian-friendly Gibraltar.

As with all completed infrastructural projects, further feedback and consultation is welcomed in order to further enhance and improve the area.

The Minister for Transport, the Hon John Cortes said: The completion of the new footpaths at South Barrack Ramp is a crucial step in improving pedestrian safety and accessibility for residents. These improvements reflect our ongoing commitment to sustainable and people-centered urban planning, and to listening to the community. Enhancing pedestrian infrastructure is a key objective of our Active Travel Strategy, and we will continue working towards improving and creating new footpaths where possible.”
