The Ministry of Transport is pleased to announce the completion of a new bus stop at Europa Point, marking a significant step forward in improving public transport infrastructure and pedestrian accessibility in the area. This initiative aligns with the Sustainable Traffic, Transport, and Parking Plan (STTPP), reinforcing the Government’s commitment to modernising its transport network while promoting sustainability.
The project involved the amalgamation of two previous bus stops into a single, centralised location, streamlining operations and improving the frequency of bus services for residents and visitors alike. This bus stop will serve key facilities in the area, including the Mosque, the University of Gibraltar, and residents of Europa Walks, offering better connectivity and convenience for all users.
The existing bus stop by the lighthouse has been decommissioned and is now a waiting zone for tourist coaches who frequent this area during their tours. During extreme weather, the Gibraltar Bus Company Limited did not service the original Europa Point stop due to sea spray infiltration in the bus, proving costly and increasing the wear and tear of the existing bus fleet. The move resolves this.
This new bus stop improves pedestrian pathways and the creation of a new pedestrian crossing, ensuring safer and easier access to and from the stop. The bus shelter has also undergone a complete refurbishment to provide a comfortable waiting area, offering protection from inclement weather. This ensures that the bus service remains a viable and attractive option, regardless of weather conditions.
The design and implementation of the project were carried out in consultation with the Gibraltar Bus Company Limited to ensure the new facilities meet operational needs and passenger expectations. This new location is also designed to ensure the continued operation of the bus service during large-scale events held at the Europa Point Complex, minimising disruption for regular users.
In addition to these improvements, new planting areas have been introduced as part of the project, enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the area while contributing to Gibraltar’s green initiatives. Overall, this represents an improvement for Europa Point, a key destination for both locals and tourists. HM Government of Gibraltar remains dedicated to continuous investment in public transport and pedestrian infrastructure, ensuring a more connected, safe and sustainable future for all.
Minister for Transport, the Hon John Cortes said: “The completion of this project demonstrates our commitment to enhancing public transport infrastructure in Gibraltar. The new bus stop at Europa Point is more than just a transit point; it’s a significant improvement in accessibility, service frequency, and user experience. By consolidating stops and upgrading facilities, we’re ensuring a more sustainable and efficient transport network for our community.”
