Chief Minister says Treaty protects Gibraltar, its identity and way of life - 157/2026

The Chief Minister, the Hon Fabian Picardo KC MP, reacted to the GSD statement saying: "Mr Azopardi doesn't seem to get it. If we had obtained the right of establishment for our 38,000 residents, it would have meant agreeing the right of establishment for 480,000,000 people in Gibraltar. We did NOT want to do that, as it exposed us greatly. We considered that the right way to protect Gibraltar, our identity and our way of life. The new residence requirements we are shortly going to publish will also be designed to do that. Perhaps Mr Azopardi will now understand our position and why it matters for all of us that Gibraltar should not adopt the approach Mr Azopardi is backing."
