BESS Commissioning Tests Tonight; Disruption Unlikely but Possible, Says the Gibraltar Electricity Authority - 29/2026

January 19, 2026

The Gibraltar Electricity Authority advises the public that the testing and commissioning programme for the new Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is continuing, following the initial announcement issued on 1 December 2025.

As part of the next phase of this carefully managed programme, additional technical tests are scheduled to take place tonight, commencing at midnight. While disruption is unlikely, the advice received by the Government is that a power outage remains possible during the testing.

The Minister for Health, Care and Business, who also has responsibility for the Gibraltar Electricity Authority, Gemma Arias-Vasquez, will be on site observing the tests.

The Gibraltar Electricity Authority apologises for any inconvenience this may cause. While such interruptions are undesirable, they are an inevitable part of testing and commissioning complex energy infrastructure of this scale. To minimise disruption to households, businesses and essential services, the tests have been scheduled overnight when electricity demand is at its lowest.

The commissioning of the BESS represents a major investment in strengthening Gibraltar’s energy resilience and supporting the Government’s long-term energy and sustainability objectives.
