The Airport Fire and Rescue Service has completed its latest Road Traffic Incident (RTI) Instructor and Assessor courses, strengthening operational capability in responding to complex airside and landside emergencies. The courses were delivered shortly before Christmas.
The intensive week-long RTI programme revalidated existing instructors and qualified new instructors, equipping them with advanced skills in managing road traffic incidents, teaching best-practice techniques and leading crews in challenging rescue scenarios. The training was delivered locally to six Firefighters and Leading Firefighters by Simon Bolton of SimTrainer UK, who brings extensive experience in both local authority and airport firefighting.
The training covered incidents involving a wide range of specialist vehicles operating in and around airfields and also addressed the specific approaches and safe extrication techniques required to release trapped casualties from crashed aircraft.
In addition, a further six firefighting personnel completed a separate three-day Assessor qualification. This enables the AFRS to continue evaluating operational performance internally and to maintain high-quality assured training standards.
All newly qualified Instructors and Assessors will now support the AFRS annual recurrent training programme, reinforcing its commitment to professional development and operational excellence.
The Minister with responsibility for Fire Services, Leslie Bruzon, said:
“These courses ensure AFRS teams remain highly skilled in their operational roles and are also equipped to train and assess others to the highest standard. Investing in our people directly enhances the safety and resilience of both our airport and the wider community.”
