The Post Office is a department within the Gibraltar Government which has been running postal services for Gibraltar since 1886. Its aim is to maintain and where possible enhance existing services as well as enhancing quality of service by adopting new and modern systems, technology and procedures. In addition to the normal letter and parcel post services, which include registered and express, the Gibraltar Post Office provides several other services such, as EMS (Express Mail Service, previously Datapost), Post Restante facilities and private P.O. Boxes. There are currently over 1600 private P O Boxes with plenty available for hire. The Post Office operates a banking facility on behalf of the Gibraltar Savings Bank, consisting of Ordinary Deposit Accounts. British Postal Orders are also available from our General Counter's. In 2005 the Gibraltar Post Office was granted the title of "Royal" by Her Majesty the Queen. Gibraltar is the only Commonwealth or British Overseas Territory outside the United Kingdom that enjoys this distinction. It joins Royal Mail in bearing the title "Royal". The Gibraltar Post Office is now known as the “Royal Gibraltar Post Office”.
