The London office is responsible for all matters pertaining to
Gibraltar in the UK. The Gibraltar Government London representative is Mr Albert Poggio
MBE who is also director of the Gibraltar Tourist Board, Vice Chairman of the Calpe House
Trust, Chairman of the UK Overseas Territories Association, Director of the Friends of
Gibraltar Heritage and a Director of MedCruise, the association of Mediterranean Ports.
The London office works very closely with both Houses of Parliament and
is responsible for the implementation of the Ministry for Tourism & Transports
policy for the development of tourism to Gibraltar from the UK and farther afield. This
includes the promotion of Gibraltars port and developing the cruise market in
addition to the growing conference and incentive sector.
The UK activities relating to the Finance Centre under the direction of
the DTI are also co-ordinated through the London base.
The well being and care of Gibraltar patients required to travel to the
UK for specialist medical treatment is an important role for the London office. Calpe
House, the residential home used by these patients and their escorts, plus patient
support, is provided under the Government of Gibraltar sponsored medical scheme.
The Strand offices provide a contract point for the Gibraltar Heritage
Society. The Society supports all matters relating to the Gibraltar Heritage Trust. A
limited range of souvenir items such as books and special edition stamps are available for
sale from the offices in the Strand.

The policy of the Government is to promote tourism to
Gibraltar from other markets outside the traditional market which is the UK. The most
obvious alternative source market is Spain, which is potentially of considerable
importance for Gibraltar tourism. In order to maximise the opportunities available in this
field, a Gibraltar Tourist Office in Madrid has been set up.
The office is located in the Torre de Madrid, an
emblematic building in the heart of the city centre, on the Plaza de Espana by the Gran
Via. There are a number of tourist related companies operating in the building including
the British Tourist Board and a number of airlines and travel agencies.
The office is permanently manned by a
marketing/public relations officer and an administrative clerk, under the control of Mr
Peter Canessa, the Chief Executive of the Gibraltar Tourist Board.
The role of the administrative clerk includes
attending to personal callers at the office, and handling telephone and written enquiries.
The marketing/public relations clerk is charged with establishing and maintaining contact
with tour operators and travel agents in Spain, with a view to putting together new
Gibraltar packages and liaises with the Spanish press for advertising, editorials and
press visits. Both clerks attend trade fairs, exhibitions and conferences as and when
required.
The office is proving to be a most useful sales and
marketing tool for the Gibraltar Tourist Board.
